HISTORY

The National Iota Foundation (NIF) was formed by Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. in 1992 as a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt non-profit foundation. NIF was founded and continues its commitment to promoting scholarship, leadership, citizenship, fidelity, and brotherhood through social service and community outreach and charitable donations. NIF operates to further the best interest and general welfare of the Fraternity and our community through grants, donations, receiving and acquiring gifts and bequests of money, and property. At its core, NIF is a philanthropic organization! NIF is committed to charitable works that educate, cultivate and advocate the programming thrust of Iota and its stakeholders. The Foundation remains dedicated to making a difference in the educational, personal and professional lives of the Fraternity’s brotherhood and our communities.

Through its national programs, NIF supports Iota’s programming initiatives by cultivating internal and external relationship; being advocate for the Fraternity’s vision; and educating our brothers and the community on how Iota’s principles relate to their lives. One of the Foundation’s initiatives is to establish a Graduate Loyalty Fund. This Fund enables NIF to directly contribute to the Fraternity’s programs and defray costs that would normally be borne by the brotherhood.

The Fraternity is not about the business of accumulating wealth, that’s the role of The Foundation. A primary responsibility of NIF is to be the custodial guardian of Fraternity’s assets. NIF proudly opened the doors to Founders Hall, the Fraternity’s International Headquarters on October 15, 2000. The Foundation purchased this beautiful facility located in the Greenmount West neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. Founders Hall is located in an economic empowerment zone in a West Baltimore neighborhood.

The Headquarters acquisition symbolizes tenacity of our Founders, is a tribute to former Grand Polari, and all brothers of the Fraternity. Since the dedication of Founders Hall, the Foundation has been proactive in revitalizing the Greenmount West neighborhood. The Foundation has advocated the involvement of legacy residence in the revitalization of Greenmount West neighborhood.

The affairs of the Foundation are managed by a Board of Directors of loyal Iota’s who volunteer their time freely to ensure the Foundation’s success. The Board strives to act in the best interest of the Foundation, rather than personal interest or the interests of third parties. This transparency is maintained through Conflict of Interest and Whistle blowing Polices. These governance policies are in place to prevent actual, potential, or perceived impropriety. Board transactions are accomplished through regular meetings and through standard or an Ad-Hoc committee structure. Our current Board brings more than 410 years combined fraternity service and professional experience to the table. Directors share their expertise from investments, legal, commerce, business, public sector, federal government, and retail and apply these skills to doing the work of the Foundation.
